At WWDC 2026 Apple officially unveiled a new generation of Siri powered by artificial intelligence. The company promises major changes in personalization, contextual understanding, and integration with apps. Many users began to wonder whether it’s worth waiting for the iPhone 18 specifically because of these features. The latest reports, however, indicate that the differences between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 in terms of Siri AI will be very small. That means the decision to buy a new model may come down to entirely different factors.
Siri AI will reach both iPhone generations
Apple plans to make the new Siri AI available to all iPhones equipped with at least 8 GB of RAM. That means support will come not only to the iPhone 18 series but also to the iPhone 17 and selected earlier models. Users will be able to use features that understand personal context, analyze on-screen content, and execute more advanced commands spanning multiple apps at once. The new Siri will also offer intelligent responses, enhanced writing tools, image generation, and photo-editing features. There will also be the ability to create personalized shortcuts and automations. According to available information, most of the new features will be identical on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18. That means users won't lose access to key AI features just because they choose a cheaper model. For many people this could be important news, especially if they plan to buy a phone later this year. Apple apparently wants to avoid a situation where artificial intelligence is available only on the most expensive devices. As a result, the new Siri capabilities should reach a much larger number of users. It's also good news for people who don't intend to replace their phone every year. In practice, Siri AI could turn out to be a more universal service rather than an exclusive feature of a specific model. Apple is therefore betting on wide availability rather than artificial restrictions. This approach could positively affect how the company's entire AI ecosystem is perceived, especially since competitors often reserve the most advanced features only for the newest devices.
The iPhone 18 will offer different selling points than artificial intelligence
Although Siri AI won't differ significantly between the two generations, the iPhone 18 is expected to offer a few other improvements. The most frequently mentioned new feature is a new 2 nm processor, which should deliver higher performance and better energy efficiency. There are also reports of more RAM and minor camera enhancements. Such changes could translate into longer battery life and better handling of demanding apps and games. For users who rely on their phone for work or mobile entertainment, that could be a compelling reason to choose the newer model.
At the same time, it's hard to call this a breakthrough comparable to an entirely new category of features. According to available information, the iPhone 18 is likely to be more of an evolution of the current generation than a revolutionary device. That means many customers may opt for the iPhone 17, especially if its price is reduced after the successor's launch. History shows that older Apple models often remain extremely popular precisely because of a better price-to-performance ratio. If Apple maintains a similar strategy, the iPhone 17 could become one of the best-selling smartphones in its class, especially since it will provide access to nearly all Siri AI features.
For the average user, differences in everyday use may be hard to notice. As a result, the purchase decision will likely depend more on price, battery life, or performance than on AI itself. Siri AI may be an important addition, but it's unlikely to become the main reason to upgrade—especially if most of its capabilities are already available on the iPhone 17.
The new Siri AI looks set to be the biggest update to Apple's assistant in years, but it won't be the sole reason to buy the iPhone 18. Most of the features will also come to the iPhone 17, so users interested in AI don't necessarily have to wait for the next-generation smartphone.
