The solution automatically intercepts calls from unknown numbers and lets the user decide whether it's worth answering. Importantly, the feature is not part of Apple Intelligence, so it works on all iPhones that support iOS 26. That means many more users will be able to take advantage of the new capability. Call Screening helps effectively reduce unwanted calls
You can enable the new feature directly in the phone's settings. Just go to Settings, then Apps, Phone, and choose the option for filtering calls from unknown numbers. Apple offers three modes. The first leaves everything unchanged and lets all calls through. The second, recommended by the maker, automatically asks the caller why they're calling before the iPhone rings. The response is converted to text and shown to the user, who can decide whether to answer. The third option completely silences calls from unknown numbers and sends them straight to voicemail. That way the phone owner isn't unnecessarily distracted by telemarketers or scammers. Apple notes that you can change the settings at any time and adjust them to your preferences.
The new feature doesn’t require Apple Intelligence and works on many iPhones
One of Call Screening’s biggest advantages is its wide availability. The feature works on all models compatible with iOS 26 and doesn’t require Apple Intelligence or the latest Apple silicon. That means owners of older iPhones that support the new OS version can use it too. The solution helps reduce the number of unwanted calls while still making sure you don’t miss important ones, for example from a clinic, a government office, or a courier company. In the mode that asks the caller to state the reason for calling, the user receives a short transcription of the caller’s response before answering. This lets you quickly assess whether the call is important. Apple says the feature was designed with everyday user comfort in mind and to minimize unnecessary interruptions. It’s one of the more practical enhancements to come to iOS 26. For many people, it may prove more effective than completely silencing the phone or manually blocking additional numbers.
