However, the situation may change according to leaks from an internal memo; the company is considering lowering the price of the service and implementing bigger changes in its structure. This could be one of the most important moments in the history of Game Pass.
Microsoft admits that something isn't working
According to leaked information, the new head of the gaming division, Asha Sharma, clearly pointed out the problem: Game Pass has simply become too expensive. Internal communications emphasized that the current model "is not final" and requires changes, both in the short and long term. This is quite a straightforward admission that a strategy that was recently considered revolutionary is starting to lose its appeal. After a price increase of up to 50%, many players began to question the value of the subscription, especially when the price came close to that of full-fledged premium services. Game Pass, which was once a symbol of "too good of a deal to be true," has begun to be seen as just another expensive subscription, rather than a must-have for every gamer.
New prices and more flexible plans
Everything indicates that Microsoft not only wants to lower prices but also to rebuild the entire system. Leaks reveal information about new, cheaper tiers code-named Triton and Duet, which would mainly offer access to first-party games like Halo, Gears of War, or Fallout. This suggests a more flexible approach, where the user chooses how much they want to pay and for what range of content. Interestingly, these changes may be linked to other decisions, such as the potential removal of Call of Duty from Game Pass. If that happens, a return to lower prices seems almost necessary to maintain interest in the service. Microsoft is therefore faced with a difficult task of finding a balance between attractive pricing and a rich offering that will attract and retain players.
Everything indicates that Game Pass is entering a new phase. Cheaper and more flexible subscription could be the key to regaining players' trust, but much depends on how significant the actual changes will be.
