Canceled LG Rollable was ahead of its time. Today's smartphones are still a step behind it.

The canceled LG Rollable is back in the headlines, this time due to a detailed teardown that showcases how advanced this project was. Although the phone never went on sale, its design still makes a huge impression. Interestingly, many solutions implemented by LG have still not been utilized in today's smartphones. This shows that the industry could have taken a completely different direction.

Rollable screen instead of folding solved real problems

LG chose a completely different approach than the competition. Instead of folding the screen, the LG Rollable used a rolling mechanism with motors and a guide system that extended the screen without a visible crease. This eliminated one of the biggest problems of foldables, the characteristic "crease" on the screen. Additionally, part of the display could function as a rear screen, which was very practical for taking photos.

Why This Idea Did Not Hit the Market

The phone was close to launch, but LG pulled out of the smartphone market before it could be introduced. As a result, one of the most innovative projects in recent years was abandoned. Interestingly, despite the passage of time, manufacturers still focus primarily on foldable screens rather than developing the concept of rollable displays.

LG Rollable shows that the smartphone industry could have looked different. It is an example of technology that was ahead of its time and still has not seen a legitimate successor.
