ByteDance is preparing Project Swan. The new VR headset aims to challenge Vision Pro.

Calendar 3/4/2026

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, is entering more strongly into the high-budget XR segment. At the MWC trade fair in Barcelona, the company announced Pico Project Swan, an advanced mixed reality headset that aims to become a fully-fledged “computer on the head,” not just a gaming device. The new device is set to compete directly with Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR.

Premium Class Equipment

Project Swan is set to receive micro-OLED displays with a density of 40 pixels per degree (PPD), placing it in the same league as Vision Pro and Galaxy XR. This means very high image sharpness, sufficient for working with text or multiple virtual monitors. The headset will support a full-fledged mixed reality mode with passthrough cameras, allowing for digital elements to be overlaid on the real world. The ambition is clear: to replace physical monitors and become a work tool.

The most interesting element is the proprietary dual-chip system from ByteDance. The company claims that it offers even 2x higher performance than the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, used among others in Meta Quest 3. While it may still fall short of Apple’s chip in Vision Pro, the performance difference compared to current VR headsets is expected to be significant. This suggests that Project Swan is targeting more advanced applications – from office work to productivity and creative applications.

More than gaming

So far, the Pico brand has been mainly associated with gaming. However, Project Swan is set to clearly expand the range of applications. The operating system interface is expected to resemble visionOS and Android XR, suggesting a greater emphasis on multitasking and utility applications. The price and details regarding the software remain unknown. The launch is planned for later this year.

While Meta is increasingly focusing on lighter AR glasses, ByteDance is raising the stakes in the high-end segment. Project Swan shows that the competition for the future of spatial computers is just getting started.

Project Swan is an ambitious attempt to create an efficient XR headset for work and entertainment. High resolution, custom processors, and a focus on productivity indicate that ByteDance wants to compete seriously with Vision Pro. Now everything depends on the price and the application ecosystem.
