Apple and Major League Baseball are preparing a major change to the way baseball is watched on Apple Vision Pro. On August 28 the first-ever "Friday Night Baseball" broadcast in the Apple Immersive format will debut. Viewers will receive 3D imagery in 8K resolution with a 180-degree field of view. This will allow Apple Vision Pro headset users to watch events from a perspective that much more closely resembles being at the ballpark. The new broadcast format will be available for select games through the end of the regular season.
Baseball enters Apple Immersive
The first broadcast in the new format will be the meeting of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, scheduled for August 28 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Apple will use 3D video recorded in 8K resolution and a 180-degree field of view to give Apple Vision Pro users a much more immersive experience. The cameras will allow viewers to observe events from unique perspectives, such as during swings, dramatic plays at the outfield wall, and the reactions of players and fans. The broadcast, however, will not be limited to visuals alone. Apple will also prepare spatial audio so that stadium sounds surround the viewer. During the games, special graphics will appear showing, among other things, lineups and player statistics. Commentary for the inaugural broadcast will be provided by Paul Severino, Xavier Scruggs, and Michelle Margaux. Viewers will also have access to extra content with replays of the key moments. Importantly, pauses in play will not end the broadcast, allowing fans to keep hearing the stadium atmosphere. Full replays and highlight packages will later be available on demand in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro.
September schedule for Friday Night Baseball
Apple and MLB have also scheduled more broadcasts in the Apple Immersive format. September 4 Vision Pro users will be able to watch the Los Angeles Angels vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game, as well as the Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians game. September 11 will feature Cincinnati Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants in the immersive format. A week later, on September 18, Apple will present the San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game. At the same time the Philadelphia Phillies will face the New York Mets, although that game was not marked as an Apple Immersive broadcast. The Dodgers vs. Giants matchup looks especially intriguing because Shohei Ohtani and his team will be fighting for another division title. Earlier, the Milwaukee Brewers will try to hold their top spot in a matchup with the Cincinnati Reds, whose one of the most important players is Elly De La Cruz. Meanwhile the San Diego Padres, with Fernando Tatís Jr., will be fighting for a playoff spot via the National League wild card. Baseball fans in selected countries will be able to watch the broadcasts directly in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro. The service will be available in, among other places, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Apple wants to show that Apple Vision Pro can be used not only for movies or games, but also for watching live sports. "Friday Night Baseball" will become Apple’s first regular sports broadcast produced in the full Apple Immersive format. The combination of 8K 3D imagery, a 180-degree field of view, spatial audio and interactive graphics could significantly change the way people watch baseball. The first broadcast will take place on August 28, with additional games airing in September. For Apple Vision Pro owners, it will be one of the more interesting opportunities to test the headset’s capabilities for sports broadcasts.
