The photo library on a smartphone can quickly get out of hand. Many people take several or even a dozen shots of the same scene, and later it’s hard to decide which photos are really worth keeping. Professional photo-editing software has offered a star-rating system for years that helps organize assets. Apple apparently decided to finally bring a similar solution to its Photos app. The new feature appeared in the iOS 27 beta and could turn out to be one of the most useful changes for people who regularly shoot with a smartphone.
Star ratings will let you organize photos faster
The new feature lets you assign photos ratings from one to five stars. This allows users to mark their best shots without having to create extra albums or manually move files. The solution is especially useful for people who take large numbers of photos while traveling, at family events, or during photo sessions. After enabling the appropriate option in the Photos app, a new menu appears for each photo that lets you quickly give a rating. Apple also allows rating multiple photos at once, which significantly speeds up the entire sorting process. This lets a user review a series of similar shots and immediately pick the best ones. The feature is reminiscent of tools found in programs like Adobe Lightroom, which have been a standard among photographers for years. For many, this will be the first chance to manage photos conveniently without needing additional software. Importantly, all ratings are saved directly in the system photo library and sync with iCloud. That means rated photos will remain available on all devices linked to your Apple ID. The addition may be especially appealing to users who have been storing thousands of photos on their phones for years and struggle to quickly find the best frames. In practice, even such a small change can significantly improve everyday use of the Photos app.
Apple also adds the ability to filter top photos
Rating photos alone would be of little use without the right search tools. That’s why Apple has also prepared a new filtering system based on the number of stars assigned. Users will be able to instantly display only photos marked with a specific rating. In practice, this means you can create your own gallery of best shots without having to manually sort your entire library. If someone marks their favorite pictures with five stars, one click is enough to show only those items. The feature could prove especially useful when posting photos to social media or preparing images for further editing. For years many users have used various ways to tag photos, but none were as simple and intuitive. Apple has apparently chosen a solution proven by professionals and adapted it to the needs of the average iPhone user. Although the new feature may seem minor compared with other iOS 27 additions, it could have a big impact on everyday smartphone usability. It will be especially appreciated by people with huge photo libraries synced via iCloud. For now the feature is available in the developer build of the system, so it’s not yet clear whether it will make it into the final release unchanged. Everything indicates, however, that Apple wants to further streamline photo management in its ecosystem.
