Samsung Display could end the last quarter of 2026 with significantly weaker financial performance. This is due to cuts in orders for smartphone components from the company's two largest customers, Apple and Samsung Electronics. The main reason is rising memory prices, which are increasingly weighing on electronics manufacturers.
Apple and Samsung cut orders
According to South Korea's The Investor, Samsung's mobile division asked suppliers to cut component shipments in the fourth quarter by 20-30% compared with earlier plans. Apple, meanwhile, is said to have reduced October orders for selected parts for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by 15-20%.
This could be a major problem for Samsung Display. According to the company's financial figures for 2025, customers associated with Apple and Samsung Electronics together accounted for 62.8% of the manufacturer's revenue. Fewer orders for expensive OLED panels could therefore have a significant impact on its profits.
Are rising memory prices to blame?
The main cause of the changes is said to be the sharp rise in DRAM prices. Semiconductor manufacturers are devoting an increasing share of production capacity to memory for AI data centers, which raises the cost of components used in smartphones.
Samsung Display may also feel added pressure to cut OLED panel prices. Smartphone manufacturers are trying to reduce costs by negotiating better terms with suppliers.
So far it's unclear how much impact these changes will have on Samsung Display's results. The reports mainly concern smartphone displays, so they cannot be used to predict price cuts for OLED TVs or monitors.
