Fans of psychological and survival horror have reason to pay attention. Ghost at Dawn is an indie title that has already earned recognition from genre fans and was nominated for several industry awards. The developers aimed to combine the atmosphere of film noir with elements of classic 1990s horror. Players step into the shoes of a private detective investigating the disappearance of a young woman in an abandoned hotel filled with unsettling secrets. The whole thing promises to offer much more than just a fight for survival and jump scares from enemies lurking around every corner.
Dark investigation in a hotel full of secrets
The game takes players back to 1947. The main character is private detective Ben O'Hara, who is hired to find a missing girl named Emi Kosuke. The investigation leads him to the abandoned Pines Hotel, a place full of gruesome discoveries and unsettling secrets. The developers emphasize that the story is not focused solely on horror, but also on empathy and the social issues present in postwar America. During gameplay players will gradually uncover clues about the missing girl's fate and the detective's past. The protagonist struggles with war trauma and the consequences of events he experienced during his military service. The game's atmosphere is meant to evoke classic noir crime fiction, where the line between right and wrong is often unclear. The hotel serves as the central point of the whole story and hides many secrets waiting to be uncovered. Players will explore rooms, examine found items, and try to piece together scattered fragments of the story. Each new clue brings them closer to the truth, but also increases the risk of encountering dangers lurking in the dark. The developers say the ending depends on how much information is gathered and the decisions made during the investigation. It is the player who decides when they have enough knowledge to close the case. That way each playthrough can unfold slightly differently.
Permadeath will force players to be cautious
One of the most distinctive features of Ghost at Dawn is its permadeath system. Ben has a limited number of lives, and each failure brings him closer to losing all progress. If the player uses up all available chances, the save file will be deleted and the entire investigation will have to be started from the beginning. This is intended to increase tension and make every decision matter. The developers were inspired by classic survival-horror games but decided to expand that formula with additional risk mechanics. In practice this means players will constantly have to weigh up whether it's worth continuing to explore or better to end the investigation and preserve the information they've gathered. Additionally, the hotel contains undead adversaries and other hazards that can quickly end an adventure. This system is meant to build a sense of uncertainty throughout the entire playthrough. Every open door and every dark corridor may conceal new dangers. At the same time players will be able to gradually uncover more story elements across successive runs. That way even failure won't necessarily mean a complete waste of time. Ghost at Dawn is set to debut on Xbox on 24 June and will support Xbox Play Anywhere. This means players will be able to continue their game across different devices within Microsoft's ecosystem.
Ghost at Dawn looks set to be an intriguing blend of horror, noir detective story and survival gameplay. The title emphasizes atmosphere, investigation, and a demanding permadeath system that can significantly heighten the tension during play. The game's Xbox release is scheduled for June 24.
