Xiaomi continues its dynamic expansion in the automotive market. After the electric SU7 saloon and the YU7 SUV, the company is preparing another family of cars, this time using an EREV powertrain. The manufacturer has published the first details of the SkyNomad models ahead of the official unveiling of the new Kunlun platform. The new SUVs are intended to combine a long electric range with the ability to cover long journeys without the need for frequent charging. Xiaomi is targeting primarily the premium family car segment. The full presentation of the new models will take place on 30 July.
Xiaomi opts for an EREV powertrain and the new Kunlun architecture
The new SkyNomad family will be the first in Xiaomi’s lineup to use an EREV powertrain instead of a conventional battery-electric vehicle. The Kunlun system combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 112 kW with an electric drive. The petrol engine does not drive the wheels directly but generates energy for the battery. According to Xiaomi, the solution works with petrol of 92, 95 and 98 octane. The manufacturer declares a minimum fuel consumption of 5.7 l/100 km under the WLTC cycle after the battery has been depleted. This layout is intended to combine the advantages of an electric car with the convenience of a conventional petrol car on longer journeys. Xiaomi intends to compete primarily with Chinese makers specialising in EREV vehicles, such as Li Auto and Aito. The company emphasises that the new platform has been developed with premium family SUVs in mind. The manufacturer will also offer an eight-year warranty or up to 160,000 kilometres on the powertrain. Servicing will only be required every three years or after 30,000 kilometres from the first service. Xiaomi hopes such measures will increase the appeal of the new models. The official presentation of the Kunlun architecture will take place at the end of July.
SkyNomad to offer long range and several body styles
Xiaomi has also revealed initial information on the individual models. The SkyNomad N90 Max will be fitted with two electric motors and a 76 kWh battery. The manufacturer claims an electric range of 363 to 370 kilometres under the WLTC procedure. The car will be available as both a five-seater and a seven-seater with a 2+2+3 seating arrangement. The smaller SkyNomad N70 Max will be offered with single- or dual-motor options and with 52 kWh or 76 kWh batteries. Depending on the version, the manufacturer promises an electric range of between 265 and 380 kilometres. Xiaomi also said that the N90 Max prototype has already completed more than 60,000 kilometres of road testing across various regions of China. The company has not yet revealed prices or launch dates for the new SUVs. Overall maximum range and charging specifications have not been disclosed either. All missing information is to be presented at the Kunlun architecture event on 30 July. It will be then that Xiaomi will showcase the full capabilities of the new SkyNomad family.
Xiaomi is preparing another important step in the development of its automotive offering. The SkyNomad family is set to combine the benefits of an electric powertrain with EREV technology, and the official presentation on 30 July will show whether the manufacturer can compete effectively with the leaders of this segment in China.
