Xbox and TCL have announced a collaboration under which the Xbox app will appear on selected TCL Smart TVs. This will allow users to access Xbox Cloud Gaming directly on the TV, without the need for an Xbox console. To start playing you will need a supported TV, a compatible controller and access to cloud play time. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will also gain access to a library of games playable in the cloud. The solution is intended to extend the Xbox ecosystem to additional devices and give players greater freedom to choose where they play.
Xbox app will let you play on your TV without a console
The Xbox app will be made available on selected TCL Smart TVs in the coming months. Microsoft has not yet provided a precise list of supported models or a specific rollout date. The company does say the solution will reach TCL users in more than 25 countries. After installing the app on a compatible TV, you will be able to access Xbox Cloud Gaming. Games will not run locally on the TV but will be streamed from cloud infrastructure. That means you will not need an Xbox console to play. A supported controller will be required, however, to operate the games. Access to the cloud gaming service itself will be linked to the play time offered as part of Xbox Game Pass or purchased separately. With the appropriate subscription, a user will also gain access to the library of cloud-supported games. Microsoft notes this includes major releases, well-known series and indie titles. This way the TV can become another device that lets you enter the world of Xbox without buying additional hardware. The company is pursuing a strategy of making its games available on an increasing number of devices. The partnership with TCL is another step towards decoupling access to Xbox from a specific console.
