A few years ago, buying a television with a diagonal close to 100 inches was a dream available only to a few. Today the situation is completely different, and the largest manufacturers are increasingly investing in the segment of exceptionally large screens. Growing competition means prices are falling much faster than they did for smaller models. As a result, home cinema is becoming attainable for an increasing number of users. The development of this segment is driven primarily by Chinese manufacturers and their local LCD panel factories. Everything suggests that televisions will be even larger in the coming years.
98- and 100-inch TVs are entering the line-ups of more manufacturers
The first affordable 98-inch TV was introduced by TCL in 2022. A year later Hisense responded with its own 100-inch model. The success of those designs prompted Samsung and Sony to quickly enter the segment. In subsequent years the range of giant televisions began to expand rapidly. LG first launched a 98-inch LCD TV, followed by a 100-inch model. In 2025 similar devices also appeared in the line-ups of many smaller manufacturers. This year Philips has also joined the group of companies offering such models with a TV from its The One series. Analysts say this indicates that the very large TV segment has matured. Most available models, however, use 4K panels rather than 8K. Manufacturers currently regard higher resolution as less important than attractive pricing. At the same time, Black Friday promotions mean prices for the largest televisions are steadily falling. Last year one of TCL's 98-inch models sold for just around $1,000 during the sale.
Chinese factories are driving the market, and the future belongs to even larger screens
The development of the large-screen TV segment is largely driven by Chinese LCD panel manufacturers. All 98-inch LCD panels are currently produced by TCL CSOT, while 100-inch panels are supplied by BOE and HKC. As a result, production of large televisions is gradually shifting from South Korea and Taiwan to China. LCD manufacturers are doing this to better compete with OLED televisions, which are gaining popularity at smaller sizes. At the same time, very large TVs are beginning to displace projectors, offering considerably better picture quality and support for modern HDR technologies. 115-inch models are already available. As early as 2026, the first 130-inch LCD televisions are expected to arrive. Experts note, however, that further increases in size may encounter limits related to the transportation and installation of such devices. In future, rollable televisions or modular LED displays could become alternatives. The industry is also developing virtual reality technologies that might replace huge screens in homes.
98-inch and 100-inch televisions are no longer a luxury reserved for the few. Growing competition and the expansion of Chinese factories mean prices are falling rapidly, and manufacturers are already preparing the next generation of even larger screens reaching up to 130 inches.
