Myst and Riven return in modern remakes on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2. Cyan Worlds studio has confirmed that the refreshed versions of these cult puzzle-adventure games will debut on 19th May and will support both classic gameplay on the television screen and a full VR experience. This is another return of legendary productions from the 90s, which for years have been considered one of the most important adventure games in history.
Myst and Riven will utilise the capabilities of PS5 and PS VR2
Creators emphasise that the biggest challenge was simultaneously refining the standard and VR versions so that both offered high-quality gameplay. The remakes will support ray tracing, RT reflections, and special performance modes allowing players to choose between better graphics and higher frame rates. With ray tracing turned off, the games will run at 60 FPS, while full graphical effects will limit the frame rate to 30 FPS.
Owners of the PS5 Pro will receive additional enhancements such as higher texture quality, greater rendering distance, better post-processing effects, and improved image resolution in VR. The studio has also used a modified version of Unreal Engine TSR responsible for image scaling, which is intended to help maintain high graphic quality while ensuring good performance.
Iconic 90s games return in full-fledged remakes
Myst and Riven were among the biggest gaming phenomena of the 90s. The original Myst remained the best-selling PC game in the world for around a decade and helped popularise more cinematic and atmospheric adventure games. The remakes aim to preserve the atmosphere of the originals while simultaneously offering modern visual presentation and full support for VR. Cyan Worlds also revealed that both games will support a new power-saving mode on PS5. This feature will lower the resolution and limit the frame rate to 30 FPS to reduce the console's energy consumption. According to the developers, the remakes have been designed so that players can choose exactly the style of gameplay that suits them best – from classic couch gaming to complete immersion in the VR world.
Myst and Riven are returning in refreshed versions specially prepared for PS5 and PS VR2. The cult adventure games are set to combine the atmosphere of the classics with modern graphics, ray tracing, and full support for virtual reality.
