Sony is not slowing down in developing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro. The latest system software beta shows the company wants to make the most of PSSR 2.0 technology, its own AI-based image upscaling system. The new update will ensure the relevant option is enabled automatically, so players should enjoy better image quality even in titles that have not yet been updated by developers.
Update will automatically enable enhanced image upscaling
According to information from the beta of the new PlayStation 5 system software, the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will now be enabled by default after installing the update. This means PS5 Pro users will not need to turn this option on in the console settings themselves. Sony aims to ensure that all compatible games benefit from the latest improvements in PSSR 2.0 technology. The feature should also work in titles using an older version of the image upscaling system. That way, games can deliver a sharper, more detailed picture without developers having to prepare separate updates. This is particularly important for titles that have not received support for the newer PSSR version since launch. Sony says the solution will improve displayed image quality while maintaining the console’s high performance. The manufacturer has previously suggested that the switch responsible for the enhanced upscaling will eventually be removed entirely as later PSSR versions become standard. The current update is therefore another step in moving to the newer technology. It looks like PS5 Pro users will see improved image quality with virtually no additional action required.
Sony is developing PSSR 2.0, but the update brings few other changes
The PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, or PSSR, is one of the key features that set the PS5 Pro apart. The first version did not always perform perfectly, especially in some games using Unreal Engine 5, where lighting rendering issues occurred. The newer PSSR 2.0 aims to eliminate these imperfections and deliver a clearer image across more titles. The latest system beta focuses specifically on this and offers few other new features. Sony only reports system stability fixes and minor changes related to the option to disable the Bluetooth module in selected regions. Because this is currently a beta, further changes could still appear before the official release. The company has also not provided a date for rolling the update out to all console users. Players taking part in the beta programme are the first to test new solutions and provide feedback before the final version is released. However, it appears the biggest change will be the automatic use of the improved PSSR 2.0 across all supported games.
The new PS5 Pro update is intended to make the PSSR 2.0 technology much more widely used than before. Automatically enabling the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will allow image quality to be improved even in older games that support the earlier version of the upscaling system. Although the beta does not introduce many other new features, for PS5 Pro owners it could prove to be one of the most significant updates related to graphics quality.
