Sony is gradually withdrawing from the physical media market. This time the company has ceased shipments of the UBP-X700/K player, the last standalone 4K Blu-ray disc player in Japan. It’s another worrying piece of news for home cinema enthusiasts who still demand the very highest picture and sound quality.
The end of Sony's last player?
According to the Japanese site Kunkoku, Sony ceased shipments of the UBP-X700/K model on 22 October 2026. The device debuted in May 2025 and supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, HDR10, Dolby Vision as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS audio.
In Sony’s official Japanese store the product is marked as unavailable with no plans to restock. No successor has been announced either.
This means that the only Sony device in Japan that still allows playback of 4K Blu-ray discs is the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive. However, the console does not support Dolby Vision when playing films from discs.
What about players in Poland?
For now the changes concern the Japanese market. Sony has not announced a global end to sales, and the UBP-X700/K model can still be found in Polish shops. In response to What Hi‑Fi? the manufacturer declined to comment on reports of production ending.
The withdrawal of the device is part of a broader trend towards reducing hardware offerings for physical media. In February Sony announced it would end shipments of Blu-ray disc recorders in Japan. In the standalone 4K player market, manufacturers such as Panasonic and Magnetar remain active.
