Sony is preparing changes to the PlayStation Network system that may affect how online features are used. This involves the introduction of mandatory age verification for some communication features.
What does age verification involve
The new system is designed to work by scanning a QR code, which will redirect the user to their smartphone. There, they will have to confirm their age using one of several methods. This includes uploading an identity document, facial scanning, or verification through a mobile network operator. This means that access to chat or other social features may depend on age verification.
At this moment, the solution is being tested in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This is no coincidence, as new regulations regarding online safety and the protection of younger users are appearing there. However, all signs indicate that this is just the beginning, and similar solutions may reach other regions.
Why Sony is doing this
The changes are in response to increasing regulatory pressure. In many countries, regulations are being introduced to limit children's and teenagers' access to potentially harmful content and online features. Similar ideas have emerged before, for example with Discord, which shows that the entire market is moving in this direction.
For some users, this is an additional step and a potential invasion of privacy. On the other hand, companies are trying to meet legal requirements and enhance safety on their platforms.
