Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC as a significantly expanded version of the arcade shooter Railbreak. Dead Drop Studios’ title takes players to the zombie‑infested town of Cypress Ridge and relies on a classic auto‑scrolling camera and relentless combat. The new version offers, among other things, 18 playable characters, additional modes, improved graphics and the option to play in two‑player co‑op. The developers have also prepared gameplay variants featuring dinosaurs and special effects that change the rules on subsequent attempts. Railbreak DX can also be launched via Xbox Cloud Gaming without the need to download the game.
Zombie, 18 characters and plenty of shooting
Railbreak DX retains the distinctive formula of classic on-rails arcade shooters. The player doesn't control the character's movement directly, as the camera automatically guides them through successive sections of the city. Instead, what matters most are reflexes, accuracy and quick reactions to appearing enemies. In the main story mode you can play as detective Lydia Daniels or mercenary Hank. The story takes place in Cypress Ridge during a zombie apocalypse. As you move through the city you can destroy environmental objects and find useful items. Story mode is the only mode that also lets you pick up special weapons placed in specific locations. One example is a magnum hidden on a park bench in Act IV. The developers also hint at other unusual weapons, including a plasma submachine gun. Railbreak DX features a total of 18 playable survivors, whereas the original version offered nine. Each character has their own loadout, damage stats, rate of fire and distinctive traits. Michael can be a good choice for players who prioritise survival, because he is immune to Poison and Bleed. His drawback, however, is a very ammo-hungry shotgun, which can cause problems on higher difficulty levels. Rin works very differently: her special pistol can freeze zombies, but the effectiveness of her attacks depends heavily on landing headshots.
Accuracy is the key to a high score
Railbreak DX strongly rewards precise shooting, especially if the player wants to chase the highest score. Headshots deal extra damage and grant bonus points. Aiming for the limbs lets you sever body parts of regular zombies and limit their ability to attack. Grenades are useful for bigger problems but award few points, so it's better to treat them as an emergency option. You also can't shoot random civilians appearing on the route with impunity. Hitting an innocent resident brings a nasty penalty in the form of lost health. The exception is when a civilian is accidentally hit while using a screen-clearing grenade or by the explosion of a special infected enemy. The developers also encourage quickly eliminating certain monsters, such as Boom Boom or Kunoichi. Defeating them can trigger an explosion that clears out a larger group of foes. Besides the classic story mode, there is Score Attack, focused on racking up as many points as possible. Onslaught is also available, in which difficulty steadily increases until the player is ultimately defeated. Glitch Gauntlet uses roguelike elements and introduces unpredictable effects that change the gameplay. A training mode is also provided, allowing you to test characters without health restrictions. The game can be played solo or with a second player via optional two-player co-op.
Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC for US$24.99. The game features 18 playable characters, six story campaigns, Score Attack, Onslaught and Glitch Gauntlet modes, and two-player co-op. New additions include dinosaurs from DINOBREAK, the ability to combine them with zombies, improved Unreal Engine 5 visuals and ray tracing. The original Railbreak will be removed from direct sale in September 2026, and DX is intended to be the long-term supported version of the game.
