PS6 Handheld becoming less mysterious? Sony is testing the future… on PS5!

Calendar 7/24/2025

Sony is testing a new PS5 feature that may reveal the existence of the PS6 Handheld. Find out what we know about Power Saver for Games and PlayStation’s future.

Sony has announced tests for a new update for the PS5, but it’s not the list of fixes that has attracted the most attention from players. Among the new features is a “Power Saver for Games” mode, which – at first glance – is designed to reduce energy consumption while gaming. The problem is that an almost identical feature appeared a month ago in leaks about the portable PS6. This coincidence has sparked a wave of suspicion within the gaming community.

“Power Saver for Games” sounds familiar. And it’s no coincidence

Sony explains the new mode as part of its pursuit of “net zero greenhouse gas emissions.” That sounds noble, but many gamers see something more in it. The mode limits game performance – reducing resolution, frame rate, and power consumption – just as the operation of the PS6 Handheld was described. The new console is said to allow playing PS5 titles in a simplified mode, which perfectly aligns with the feature being tested today on the PS5. Journalists from The Verge have also noted that this could be an attempt to prepare developers for a new standard of game operation across various hardware configurations.

PS6 Handheld only after 2027? Sony may be testing it as early as today

Although Sony officially says nothing about a portable PS6, leaks suggest a release no sooner than in two years. This does not change the fact that the company may already be testing future solutions in the familiar PS5 environment. The "Power Saver for Games" mode looks like the first step towards a new generation – one that will work on both large screens and in a handheld version. Coincidence? Gamers have no illusions.
