The PlayStation 5 has gained the unofficial ability to run games from the cult classic PS2, including from original discs! This is all thanks to the PS5SX2 emulator, created by a modder operating under the pseudonym Sword. Interestingly, the software not only lets you run classic titles but also enhances their graphics, even up to 4K resolution.
PS5SX2 is a special version of the popular PCSX2 emulator, adapted to run directly on the PlayStation 5. The latest update introduced support for original PS2 game DVDs. After inserting a disc into the drive, the console can copy its contents into memory and launch the game.
PS2 games in 4K and 60 FPS? It's possible!
The emulator offers resolution scaling of up to six times, which allows you to achieve an image close to 4K. It also supports AMD FSR, fixes for the 16:9 aspect ratio and modifications enabling 60 FPS gameplay in selected titles. Not everything works perfectly, though. Demanding games can suffer from performance issues, and PS5SX2 requires a modified, jailbroken console. So this is not an official Sony feature available to all users. The standard PS5 disc drive also does not support PS2 games released on discs.
Interestingly, the emulator's creator does not intend to stop there. Sword confirmed he is also working on porting the RPCS3 emulator to the PS5, which in the future could enable running PlayStation 3 games, including from discs.
