Used hardware is usually significantly cheaper than new. This time the situation is completely different. US retailer GameStop has priced used and refurbished PlayStation 5 Pro consoles at almost $1,400. That's as much as 55% more than the official price of a new console!
At the beginning of October the price of a used PS5 Pro at GameStop rose from around US$800 to US$1,399.99. Meanwhile the suggested retail price for a new console in the US is US$899.99. Interestingly, according to Tom's Hardware, the price increase was not a mistake. Its intent was confirmed by an internal message addressed to the chain's employees.
Where do these absurd prices come from?
The main issue is the limited availability of the new PS5 Pro in the United States. The console has sold out at many major retailers, and listings at other stores were reaching as much as $1,500. Rising memory prices, driven in part by huge demand for components used in AI data centres, may be affecting the situation. Another factor is the interest in the forthcoming GTA VI, which is scheduled for release in November.
