Sony today launched the Live TV on PS5 service, which allows PlayStation 5 owners to watch ad-supported television for free. Initially the service is available to players in the United States. The service offers more than 100 live channels as well as additional on-demand content. The lineup includes films, TV series, anime, sport, news and content created by online creators. Sony aims to make it easier for users to discover free entertainment directly from the console.
Over 100 channels on PlayStation 5
Live TV on PS5 was launched as a free ad-supported service and is available in the console's Media section. To start watching, users must go to the Media tab on the PS5 home screen. Then select the Live TV on PS5 icon and sign in with a PlayStation account. Sony prepared a wide selection of programmes across various categories for the launch. Film fans get channels including MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise Free Movies, Sony One Horror Hits and Cinevault. The TV series offering includes titles such as Community, The Shield, Hell’s Kitchen, The Walking Dead, Forensic Files, Unsolved Mysteries, Deal or No Deal USA and Fear Factor. Also available are programmes such as Ice Road Truckers from A+E's HISTORY. Anime fans can watch titles such as Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note. Crunchyroll's offerings also include channels dedicated to Black Clover and Box Sets. However, Sony has not limited the service to films and series. Live TV on PS5 also includes sports channels from FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now and UFC. The sports line-up covers disciplines such as MMA, American football, ice hockey, motorsports, golf, boxing and football.
News, weather and creator content also on offer
Live TV on PS5 also offers news and weather channels, allowing the console to serve as an additional media hub. Available sources include NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX. Sony has also created a category devoted to online creators and specialist programmes. Users will find, among others, Hot Ones, The Ringer from Spotify and Futcrunch. The offering also includes comedy, extreme sports, gaming and esports content. Additional material includes documentaries, podcasts and other themed programmes. Sony emphasises that the service's content will be regularly refreshed. Over time new channels and further material are expected to be added. The company also wants to expand Live TV on PS5 beyond the current US market. Sony is already working on making the service available in Canada and has not ruled out interest in other regions. For now, however, no specific timetable has been given for extending availability beyond the US.
Live TV on PS5 is now available to PlayStation 5 users in the United States. The service offers more than 100 free ad-supported channels and additional on-demand content. The catalogue includes films, series, anime, sport, news, creator programmes and gaming-related material.
