Sony has officially confirmed it will close the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita consoles. For many gamers this marks the definitive end of the ability to purchase digital games on those platforms. The decision brings a long chapter in PlayStation's history to a close and once again sparks debate about the future of digital game ownership. Sony says previously purchased titles will still be available to download, but has not specified how long that option will remain. This is another step by Sony towards an entirely digital ecosystem.
Sony ends support for the PS3 and PS Vita stores
Sony has announced that the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will be closed, bringing nearly two decades of these platforms to an end. For many players this means the definitive end of the ability to buy new games and downloadable content for the older consoles. The company said the process of shutting down the stores will begin at the end of 2026 in selected regions. Then, in July 2027, the closure will extend to all remaining countries. After that date, making new purchases will no longer be possible. Sony does, however, assure that previously purchased games will remain available for re-download. The manufacturer did not specify how long the servers will be maintained, though. The lack of a concrete date is causing concern among users with extensive digital libraries. In practice, players do not know whether access to their purchases will be preserved for a few years or much longer. In its official statement Sony stressed that the decision was not easy and stems from the need to end support for very old platforms. The company also reminded readers that the PS3 and PS Vita played an important role in PlayStation's history. Nevertheless, for many fans this marks a symbolic end to one of Sony's most distinctive console generations.

Some gamers also recall that a similar attempt to close the stores took place back in 2021. At that time Sony withdrew the decision after a wave of criticism from the community. This time, however, everything suggests the company does not intend to change its plans. For owners of older consoles, this means the last opportunity to buy digital games that are not available on newer platforms. At the same time, the debate about the future of digital ownership of games is gaining momentum again. More and more gamers are pointing out that buying a digital copy does not always guarantee access to it for many years. The upcoming store closures could become one of the most significant examples of this change in the market.
