TCL CSOT has unveiled a new generation of the IJP OLED panel, i.e. an OLED produced by inkjet printing. The 27-inch panel offers 4K resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate and, most interestingly, a claimed brightness of as much as 500 nits across the entire screen.
500 nits across the full screen
This is an important distinction, because modern OLEDs can reach very high brightness in small areas of the image, but they usually perform much worse on a full white screen. PC Gamer notes that current QD-OLED and WOLED solutions achieve roughly 300 to 335 nits of full-screen brightness. The new TCL CSOT panel should therefore represent a clear step forward. The manufacturer has also used the classic Real Stripe RGB subpixel layout, which may improve text legibility and reduce the coloured fringing characteristic of some current OLED panels.
OLED printed like ink
IJP OLED also differs in its production method. Instead of depositing organic materials in vacuum through masks, TCL CSOT uses a technology similar to inkjet printing, in which the OLED material is applied directly to the substrate. The company is stepping up development of this technology. In August MSI already showed a 27-inch 4K 120 Hz monitor with a TCL CSOT IJP OLED panel and, as we mentioned in another news item, TCL is also building a Gen 8.6 production line intended to scale this technology.
No release date yet
The panel shown is a 27-inch, 4K and 120 Hz, but TCL CSOT has not yet given a release date for any specific monitor featuring this 500-nit version. It is also unclear when the technology will appear in other sizes. If the manufacturer's claims are borne out in production monitors, IJP OLED could become a real competitor to QD-OLED and WOLED, particularly where high brightness matters across large, bright areas of the image.
