Mini LED technology may soon see a significant drop in popularity in laptops. According to the latest forecasts from Counterpoint Research, shipments of such panels are expected to fall by as much as 75% over two years. At the same time, OLED is expected to gain increasing importance, and Apple also plans to adopt it.

OLED is displacing Mini LED in laptops

Analysts at Counterpoint Research predict that global shipments of Mini LED panels for laptops will fall by 38% in 2026, and then by a further 60% in 2027. This means that in two years their number could be only one quarter of the 2025 level.

The situation for OLED is completely different. Shipments of those panels are set to rise by 50% in 2026 and a further 24% in 2027. Meanwhile the overall laptop display market is expected to shrink by around 3% this year.

Apple could accelerate the shift

One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of OLEDs is Apple's planned move to the technology in the next generation of MacBook Pro models. According to reports, Samsung Display is to handle the initial panel deliveries, having started a new 8.6-generation OLED production line.

OLED primarily offers perfect blacks, high contrast and the ability to build thinner screens without a separate backlight. Increasingly efficient production methods are also expected to reduce panel costs.

However, this does not mean the end for Mini LED. The forecasts concern the laptop market, while in televisions Mini LED remains an important alternative to OLED.
