Metro 2039 is set to return to the most distinctive elements of the series, while the creators also want to significantly expand its formula. 4A Games once again takes players into the dark world of the Moscow Metro, where survival will demand far more than accurate shooting. The game will include plenty of exploration, stealth and combat, and the developers have placed great emphasis on a detailed presentation of the world. The creators showed around two hours of gameplay, which revealed, among other things, challenging encounters, limited resources and strong horror elements. If the full game keeps up with what was shown, series fans could be in for one of Metro's most atmospheric instalments.
Metro 2039 returns to the series' roots, but aims to be even more challenging
Metro 2039 is set to be the next major instalment in 4A Games' post-apocalyptic series, which this time takes players back to Moscow. The story unfolds in a world ruined by nuclear war, where the survivors have spent years trying to live in the underground metro system. The protagonist returns to a place he previously tried to avoid. Once there, it becomes clear the region has fallen under the control of Hunter, who has created his own regime based on fear. The player will have to traverse both the underground tunnels and the ruined surface of Moscow. 4A Games has prepared gameplay focused on survival, stealth and careful decision-making. Around two hours of gameplay were shown during the presentation. Even that segment made it clear the developers do not intend to hold the player's hand. Metro 2039 uses many in-world elements instead of a traditional interface. Information about supplies, the map and the remaining time on the gas mask filter is presented physically. The player must, among other things, open their backpack to craft ammunition and filters, and the remaining time before the filter needs replacing can be checked on a watch. Even saving the game has been tied to an in-world element, making the gameplay feel more immersive.
The developers want the player to fear every encounter
A strong sense of threat will play a major role in Metro 2039, because fighting will not always be the best option. During testing, the player quickly discovered that mindlessly eliminating enemies can end very badly. On the surface there are, among other things, huge nosalises that can attack in large packs. A far wiser solution can sometimes be to bypass enemies and remain unnoticed. Stealth is intended to be one of the most important gameplay elements, particularly when infiltrating enemy bases. The developers allow you to observe enemy behaviour and plan your next moves before launching an attack. If things get out of hand, you can of course switch to direct combat. An important element is also the limited number of resources, which must be used wisely. The crafting system has been simplified to basic materials, including metal and chemicals. The game will also feature more specialised resources intended for weapon modification. There will also be elements of horror and paranormal phenomena. One of the sequences shown led the player through a haunted school full of children's ghosts and puzzles involving masks and candles. Everything therefore suggests that Metro 2039 will try to combine the heavy atmosphere of survival with more classic action and moments of outright horror.
Metro 2039 promises to be an ambitious return to the world of the Moscow metro. 4A Games is focusing on a detailed environment, a limited interface and mechanics designed to increase the sense of physical presence in the game world. Combat will be important, but stealth, conserving resources and avoiding unnecessary confrontations will be just as significant. The game will also offer more direct elements of horror and paranormal events. Metro 2039 will arrive on Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2027.
