Lexar used IFA 2026 to showcase its new Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD. The device has a card-like design and, according to the manufacturer, is the thinnest portable SSD in the world. At its thickest point the enclosure measures about 3.8 mm, tapering to just 1 mm at the edge. The drive is designed for people who record and edit footage directly on mobile devices. The manufacturer is also emphasising a magnetic mounting system intended to cut down on cable clutter.
Muse was designed primarily with mobile devices in mind
Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD uses a minimalist unibody metal enclosure made from a single piece of material. Thanks to the unibody construction, the manufacturer reduced the number of joints and visible elements on the device's surface. Inside there is a specially designed, very thin PCB and high-density NAND flash memory. This solution allowed available space to be maximised without sacrificing the advertised performance. The enclosure is about 3.8 mm at its thickest point. At the very edge the device is just 1 mm thick. One of the most interesting features is the magnetic data connector that Lexar calls PogoPin. The supplied SnapLink Magnetic Cable, which uses a spring-loaded pin interface, can be attached to the drive. Neodymium N52 magnets are used both in the connector and in the magnetic case. They provide precise alignment of the drive and a secure attachment. The case also acts as a grip and allows the SSD to be attached to the back of MagSafe-compatible iPhone models. This keeps the whole setup compact when recording footage or working while travelling. Lexar targets the Muse primarily at people who need extra storage space for mobile content creation.
Over 1 GB/s and ProRes 4K recording at 120 fps
In terms of performance, Muse is said to offer read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s. The maximum claimed write speed is 1000 MB/s. The drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Macs and other devices equipped with USB-C. Particularly interesting is the ability to record Apple ProRes 4K footage directly at up to 120 fps on compatible iPhone models. This allows the external SSD to serve as extra storage when capturing large video files. Muse is also intended for fast data transfer, storing projects and creating backups. The manufacturer also envisages using the drive as additional storage for mobile devices. Its compact dimensions are designed to make it easier to use while travelling and working away from home. The magnetic system, meanwhile, is intended to reduce the problem of a tangled cable when using a phone. Lexar emphasises that Muse is part of the company's wider strategy around mobile data storage and creator-focused solutions. The IFA 2026 showcase also includes memory technologies intended for artificial intelligence applications and B2B solutions. The Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD is due to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2026. Initially it will be available in two capacities: 512 GB and 1 TB. Lexar has not yet announced prices for the new drives.
