Sony and LEGO have unveiled a new set dedicated to the first PlayStation console. The LEGO PlayStation lets you build a replica of the original unit and its distinctive controller. The model comprises 1,911 pieces and measures 26 cm across when completed. The designers also hid references to the brand's history and to two iconic games from the original PlayStation. The set will go on sale in early October 2026.
Original PlayStation built from LEGO bricks
The new set is the result of a collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment and the LEGO Group. Its main element is a replica of the original PlayStation console that debuted in 1994. Once assembled, the model is around 26 cm wide. The maker describes it as built almost to a 1:1 scale compared with the original. Exactly 1,911 bricks are needed to construct the whole set. The kit also includes a replica PlayStation controller, allowing you to recreate the distinctive look of Sony’s first console set. However, the build is not merely a static model to place on a shelf. The LEGO PlayStation is fitted with working mechanisms for the Power and Open buttons. The controller can also be connected to the console, mirroring how the original hardware was used. LEGO designers worked with Sony to create details that reference the early days of the PlayStation brand. The build contains, among other things, hidden nods to the console’s history. The whole thing was designed to recall not only the appearance of the first PlayStation but also the gaming experiences associated with it. For collectors, therefore, it can be both a model to assemble and a decorative item linked to gaming history.
Gran Turismo and Ape Escape are also included in the set
One of the most interesting features of the LEGO PlayStation set is a pair of separate dioramas dedicated to games that debuted on Sony's first console. The first nods to Gran Turismo and depicts a miniature racetrack. The track also includes scaled-down cars that can be used to create your own display. The second diorama is devoted to Ape Escape. It depicts a nostalgic island featuring a distinctive motif from the game. The designers added the option to swap the blue and red light on the monkey's helmet. Both scenes can be detached from the main build. This allows the set owner to display them separately from the replica console. It also lets you change how the entire model is presented without having to take apart the main build. LEGO and PlayStation therefore did not limit themselves to merely recreating the console's casing. The set includes elements referencing specific games and the brand's history. It's these extras that are intended to make the build more appealing to long-time PlayStation fans.
The LEGO PlayStation will go on sale on 1 October 2026 in selected countries, including Poland, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. The recommended price is US$179.99, €159.99 or £139.99. The set will be available directly from PlayStation from 1 October, while LEGO.com and LEGO stores will start selling it on 4 October, with LEGO Insiders receiving early access. Inside the box are 1,911 pieces, a replica of the console and controller, and dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.
