The release of GTA 6 could prove to be groundbreaking not only because of the game itself but also because of the way it is distributed. Rockstar has officially confirmed that people buying the boxed edition of the title will not find a disc inside. Instead they will receive only a code enabling them to download the game from the PlayStation or Xbox digital store. It is a decision that has sparked huge debate among gamers and could accelerate the industry's move away from physical media. Rockstar Games has announced that the physical edition of GTA 6 will contain only a download code for the game, not a traditional disc. Although boxes will appear in retail and online stores, their contents will be very different from what players have been used to in recent years. The code will allow you to download the full game directly from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. According to the studio, this solution will enable, among other things, pre-loading of files before release, so players can start playing as soon as the servers go live. GTA 6 is not the first game to be sold this way, but the scale of this release means Rockstar's decision is hugely significant for the whole industry. Many developers and publishers will be watching the market's reaction closely. If sales remain very high despite the lack of a disc, other companies may begin to adopt a similar model. The game's official release is scheduled for 19 November 2026, while the physical boxes with the code are due to appear a week earlier to allow pre-loading of data. Rockstar has not explained exactly why it chose this approach. One possible reason is the game's massive file size, another is a desire to reduce the risk of leaks, or simply financial considerations. Whatever the reason, this decision clearly shows that even the biggest game launches are increasingly favouring digital distribution. For many collectors, however, this may be a disappointing change, because the boxed edition no longer provides a physical disc that can be kept on a shelf.
Digital games dominate the market and GTA 6 could seal the fate of discs
The change introduced by Rockstar is not accidental. Data from recent months show that most players are already buying games digitally. According to available statistics, around 85 per cent of games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are sold via the PlayStation Store, with only a small portion reaching customers on discs. Even more impressive figures were presented by Capcom, which reported that as much as 93 per cent of its sales are digital versions. Additionally, the new models of the PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro and some Xbox Series consoles are already available without an optical drive or require an extra charge to include one. All this shows that hardware manufacturers and publishers have long been preparing the market for a full shift to digital sales. However, this does not mean players have no reason to be concerned. Unlike game discs, digitally purchased games cannot be freely resold or kept for the future if a platform closes its store. There is also growing debate about the actual ownership rights to digitally purchased titles. Despite these doubts, interest in GTA 6 remains huge. Retailers are already reporting very high numbers of pre-orders, and the absence of a disc does not seem to be deterring the majority of customers. Everything therefore suggests that digital distribution has just taken another huge step forward. If GTA 6 succeeds in that sales model too, traditional disc releases could vanish from the market even faster.
