Spam calls have for years remained one of the biggest problems for smartphone users. Apple has decided to respond to this issue by introducing a new Call Screening feature in iOS 26. The solution automatically intercepts calls from unknown numbers and lets the user decide whether it’s worth answering. Crucially, the feature is not part of the Apple Intelligence package, so it works on all iPhones that support iOS 26. As a result, far more users will be able to benefit from the new capability. Apple has prepared several operating modes that can be adapted to individual needs.
Call Screening lets you effectively reduce unwanted calls
The new feature can be enabled directly in the phone's settings. Just go to Settings, then Apps, Phone and choose the option for filtering calls from unknown numbers. Apple offers three modes. The first leaves everything unchanged and lets all calls through. The second, recommended by the manufacturer, automatically asks the caller for the reason for contacting you before the iPhone starts ringing. The reply is converted into text and shown to the user, who can decide whether to answer. The third option completely silences calls from unknown numbers and immediately redirects them to voicemail. This prevents the phone's owner from being needlessly distracted by telemarketers or scammers. Apple emphasises that the settings can be changed at any time to suit personal preferences.
New feature does not require Apple Intelligence and works on many iPhone models
One of the biggest advantages of Call Screening is its wide availability. The feature works on all models compatible with iOS 26 and does not require support from Apple Intelligence or the latest Apple chips. That means owners of older iPhones running the new OS can use it too. The solution helps reduce unwanted calls while ensuring users do not miss important ones, for example from a doctor's surgery, a government office or a courier company. In the mode that asks the caller for the reason for contact, the user receives a short transcription of the caller's response before picking up. This allows them to quickly assess whether the call is important. Apple says the feature was designed with everyday user comfort in mind and to minimise unnecessary interruptions. It's one of the more practical improvements to arrive in iOS 26. For many people it may prove a more effective solution than completely silencing the phone or manually blocking numbers one by one.
Call Screening in iOS 26 is a simple but very useful tool that helps combat telephone spam. The feature lets you filter calls from unknown numbers, does not require Apple Intelligence and works on all compatible iPhones.
