It seems that Microsoft is beginning to recognise the problem that players have been signalling for months. Following a significant price increase for Xbox Game Pass, particularly for the Ultimate tier, there has been a wave of cancellations and growing dissatisfaction among users. However, the situation may now change according to leaks from an internal memo, the company is considering reducing the price of the service and making significant changes to its structure. This could be one of the most important moments in the history of Game Pass.
Microsoft admits that something is not working
According to leaked information, the new head of the gaming division, Asha Sharma, clearly identified the problem: Game Pass has simply become too expensive. In internal communications, it was emphasised that the current model “is not final” and requires changes, both in the short and long term. This is quite a direct admission that a strategy which was recently considered revolutionary is starting to lose its appeal. After a price increase of up to 50%, many players began to question the sense of the subscription, especially as the price approached that of full-fledged premium services. Game Pass, which once symbolised “too good a deal to be true,” is now being perceived as just another expensive subscription, rather than a must-have for every gamer.
New prices and more flexible plans
Everything suggests that Microsoft does not just want to lower prices but also to restructure the entire system. Leaks indicate information about new, cheaper tiers with codenames Triton and Duet that would primarily offer access to first-party games such as Halo, Gears of War, or Fallout. This suggests a more flexible approach, where the user chooses how much they want to pay and for what range of content. Interestingly, these changes may be related to other decisions, such as the potential removal of Call of Duty from Game Pass. If that happens, a return to lower prices seems almost necessary to maintain interest in the service. Microsoft thus faces a difficult task of finding a balance between an attractive price and a rich offer that will attract and retain players.
Everything suggests that Game Pass is entering a new phase. Cheaper and more flexible subscription may be the key to regaining players' trust, but much depends on how significant the actual changes will be.
