Apple is working on yet another major evolution of Siri, and everything indicates that it will be more than just a regular update to the assistant. According to the latest reports, iOS 27 will introduce the "Extensions" system, which will allow the integration of external AI models with Siri. This means that Siri ceases to be a closed solution and begins to function more like a hub for managing various artificial intelligences.
Siri as a "router" for AI
Instead of developing one ideal assistant, Apple is heading in a completely different direction. Siri is set to become something of an intermediary that directs tasks to the selected AI model. The user will be able to decide whether to use Google Gemini, Claude or other tools. In practice, this might look like one AI handling text writing, another coding, and yet another searching for information. Siri will merely be the "face" of the entire system, which ties everything together.
The most intriguing element of this strategy is the plan to create a special section in the App Store. It is there that users would find and install various AI extensions, much like they currently download applications. This is a very familiar move from Apple. The company is leveraging a model that once revolutionised the smartphone market. Now it is trying to do the same with AI by creating something akin to a marketplace for smart tools.
Apple is playing a dual role
At the same time, Apple is developing its own solutions within Apple Intelligence, while also opening up to external technologies. This strategy gives the company greater flexibility and allows it to compete with other giants without putting everything on one card. It is also a way to retain users within its ecosystem, rather than risking their departure to competitors.
If these plans come to fruition, Siri will undergo the biggest transformation in its history. From a simple assistant, it could evolve into a fully-fledged platform that connects various AIs and gives the user a real choice. This approach could completely change the way we use artificial intelligence on smartphones.
