If Christopher Nolan's "Odyseja" encouraged you to revisit Greek myths, here's another chance. 2004's "Troy" has just received a full 4K HDR remaster. Wolfgang Petersen's film, inspired by Homer's "Iliad", returns in significantly improved picture quality and now supports Dolby Vision.
"Troy" has been restored from the original negative
The new version of the film was prepared using new scans of the original 35 mm negative. This means it's not just a simple upscale of an older release. The remaster was produced in native 4K, and the picture also received HDR10 and Dolby Vision. HDR technologies allow for a wider range of brightness and colours with 10-bit colour depth, which should be particularly effective for viewing spectacular battle scenes and sweeping landscapes. The audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track.
Two versions of the film have been released on UHD Blu-ray
The remaster includes both the 163-minute theatrical cut and a significantly longer 196-minute director's cut. Both have been restored in 4K and feature HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The UHD Blu-ray release is handled by Arrow Video, which has prepared a limited two-disc edition. This physical release is currently the main way to watch the film in the new quality.
At the moment the situation is a little different for digital distribution. The remaster has not yet been made available in 4K on digital movie stores such as Apple TV or Amazon. Fans who want to watch 'Troy' in 4K Dolby Vision right now will therefore have to buy the UHD Blu-ray. However, price may be an issue. The limited edition costs around 65 dollars, so it's primarily aimed at collectors and people who prioritise the best possible picture quality.
"Troy" recounts events known from "The Iliad", while "The Odyssey" is its direct continuation. Both epics attributed to Homer were composed around the 8th century BC and are based on a much older song tradition. In "Troy", among others, Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom appear, and the new remaster gives viewers the chance to see Petersen's spectacle again in a quality much better suited to contemporary 4K TVs.
