Star Fox officially returns after almost a decade of hiatus. Nintendo has announced a full remake of the cult classic Star Fox 64, which will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on 25 June 2026. The production is set to be significantly larger than a typical remaster and will offer a completely refreshed visual style, new story scenes, and an online multiplayer mode.
Nintendo gives the iconic Star Fox series a major refresh
The new version of Star Fox has been described by Nintendo as a full "cinematic refresh" of the classic from the Nintendo 64. Players will once again take on the role of Fox McCloud and his team as they battle for the Lylat system against Andross, but this time the story will feature additional narrative scenes and a new prologue focusing on James McCloud, the father of the main hero. The creators have also prepared an entirely new underwater mission, refreshed character models, full voice acting, and an orchestral soundtrack. However, the classic rail shooter gameplay will be retained, where players control the Arwing ship during dynamic space battles.
Multiplayer online, cooperation and 60 FPS on Switch 2
The remake will offer three main gameplay modes. The story campaign will retain branching paths and several difficulty levels, and there will also be a special Challenge Mode and an online Battle Mode for up to eight players. In multiplayer, Team Star Fox will face off against Team Star Wolf on dedicated PvP maps.
Nintendo has also prepared a co-op mode, where one person controls the ship as the pilot, while the other is responsible for shooting. The game is expected to support new features of the Joy-Con 2, including mouse-like control. According to early analyses, Star Fox runs at 60 FPS and uses a resolution of around 1440p after scaling.
Nintendo is bringing back one of its most iconic series after many years. The new Star Fox aims to combine classic gameplay with modern graphics, online multiplayer, and additional narrative elements specially prepared for the Switch 2.
