Sony shows no signs of slowing down in developing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro. The latest system software beta shows the company wants to make the most of PSSR 2.0 technology, its own AI-based image scaling system. The new update will automatically enable the appropriate option, so players should get better image quality even in titles that haven't yet been updated by developers.

The update will automatically enable enhanced image scaling

According to information from the beta of the new PlayStation 5 software, the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will now be enabled by default after installing the update. This means PS5 Pro users won't have to turn this option on in the console settings themselves. Sony aims to ensure that all compatible games benefit from the latest PSSR 2.0 improvements. The feature should also work in titles using an older version of the image-scaling system. As a result, games should deliver a sharper, more detailed picture without developers having to prepare separate updates. This is especially important for titles that haven't received support for the newer PSSR version since launch. Sony says the solution should improve displayed image quality while maintaining the console's high performance. The company previously hinted that the switch responsible for enhanced scaling would eventually be removed entirely as subsequent PSSR versions become standard. This update is therefore another step in moving to the newer technology. Everything indicates that PS5 Pro users will get improved image quality with virtually no extra steps.

Sony is developing PSSR 2.0, but the update brings few other changes

The PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, or PSSR, is one of the key features that set the PS5 Pro apart. The initial version didn’t always perform perfectly, especially in some games using Unreal Engine 5, which experienced issues with lighting rendering. The newer PSSR 2.0 aims to eliminate those flaws and deliver a sharper image in a greater number of titles. The latest system beta focuses specifically on this element and, beyond that, doesn’t offer many new features. Sony only reports system stability fixes and minor changes related to the option to turn off the Bluetooth module in selected regions. Because this is currently a test software build, it’s possible additional changes will appear before the official release. The company also hasn’t provided a date for rolling the update out to all console users. Players taking part in the beta programme are the first to try new solutions and give feedback ahead of the final release. Everything suggests, however, that the main change will be the automatic use of the improved PSSR 2.0 in all supported games.

The new PS5 Pro update is set to make PSSR 2.0 much more widely used than before. Automatically enabling the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will improve image quality even in older games that support an earlier version of the upscaling system. While the beta doesn't add many other features, it could be one of the most significant updates related to graphics quality for PS5 Pro owners.
