RGB Mini-LED TVs offer impressive picture quality, but their prices remain high. That could change. Global Technology has begun work on a new RGB BAR backlight module that is set to significantly simplify TV design. The manufacturer says it will cut the number of driver ICs by up to two-thirds!
The new solution uses Time Sharing Operating (TSO) technology, that is, time-division multiplexing. In practice this means a single 12-channel driver can handle several LEDs sequentially, instead of requiring separate drivers for each one. According to Global Technology, the number of driver chips can be reduced by as much as 67%. Additionally, simplified wiring allows the use of cheaper, single-sided printed circuit boards.
Cheaper RGB Mini LED as early as 2027?
RGB LED technology uses separate red, green and blue backlight LEDs. This allows TVs to offer a wider colour palette than traditional LCD designs with a single-colour backlight. However, the greater number of control elements makes their production more complex and costly. RGB BAR is meant to help solve that problem. The company plans to begin mass production in 2027, and in the future also wants to use the solution in monitors and automotive displays.
Does this mean cheaper RGB Mini LED TVs? Not necessarily straight away. Lower production costs could, however, make it easier for manufacturers to bring this technology to more affordable models.
