Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC as a significantly expanded version of the on-rails shooter Railbreak. Dead Drop Studios drops players into the zombie‑overrun town of Cypress Ridge and relies on a classic on-rails camera and relentless combat. The new version includes 18 playable characters, extra modes, improved visuals and two‑player co‑op. The developers have also added dinosaur gameplay variants and special modifiers that change the rules between runs. Railbreak DX can also be played via Xbox Cloud Gaming without needing to download the game.
Zombies, 18 playable characters and plenty of shooting
Railbreak DX retains the distinctive formula of classic arcade on-rails shooters. The player doesn't directly control character movement, as the camera automatically guides them through sections of the city. Instead, reflexes, accuracy and quick reactions to emerging enemies are key. In the main story mode you can play as detective Lydia Daniels or mercenary Hank. The story takes place in Cypress Ridge during a zombie apocalypse. As you move through the city you can destroy parts of the environment and find useful items. Story mode is the only one that also lets you pick up special weapons placed in specific locations. One example is a magnum hidden on a park bench in Act IV. The developers also hint at other unusual weapons, including a submachine gun that uses plasma. Railbreak DX includes a total of 18 playable survivors, while the original version offered nine. Each character has their own loadout, damage stats, rate of fire and distinctive traits. Michael can be a good choice for players prioritising survival, as he is not affected by Poison or Bleed. His downside, however, is a very ammo-hungry shotgun that can cause problems at higher difficulty levels. Rin is completely different — her special pistol can freeze zombies, but the effectiveness of her attacks depends heavily on landing headshots.
Accuracy is key to a high score
Railbreak DX strongly rewards precise shooting, especially if a player wants to compete for the highest possible score. Headshots deal extra damage and earn bonus points. Aiming for the limbs lets you sever body parts of regular zombies and limit their ability to attack. Grenades are useful for bigger problems, but they award few points, so it's better to treat them as a last resort. You also can't get away with shooting random civilians who appear on the route. Hitting an innocent causes a heavy penalty in the form of loss of health. The exception is when a civilian is accidentally hit while using a screen-clearing grenade or by the explosion of a special infected enemy. The developers also encourage quickly dispatching certain monsters, like Boom Boom or Kunoichi. Defeating them can trigger an explosion that helps take out a larger group of enemies. Besides the classic story mode, there's Score Attack, which is focused on racking up as many points as possible. There is also Onslaught, where the difficulty steadily increases until the player is ultimately defeated. Glitch Gauntlet, meanwhile, uses roguelike elements and introduces unpredictable effects that change the course of gameplay. There's also a training mode that lets you test heroes without health restrictions. The whole game can be played solo or with a second player thanks to optional co-op for two players.
Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC for $24.99. The game offers 18 characters, six story scenarios, Score Attack, Onslaught and Glitch Gauntlet modes, and two-player co-op. New additions include dinosaurs from DINOBREAK, the ability to combine them with zombies, improved visuals in Unreal Engine 5 and ray tracing support. The original Railbreak will be removed from direct sale in September 2026, with DX set to be the game's long-term supported version.
