PSSR 2 will unlock the full potential of PS5 Pro. A massive performance boost is getting closer!

Calendar 1/13/2026

PSSR 2.0 could deliver a massive performance boost on PS5 Pro. Sony’s new AI-powered upscaling technology is expected to improve smoothness, image quality, and breathe new life into older games in 2026.

Owners of the PlayStation 5 Pro have reasons to be excited. Everything indicates that Sony is preparing a very substantial boost in power. According to the latest leaks, the technology announced by Mark Cerny, PSSR 2.0 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), is set to debut in the first quarter of 2026, which is between January and March. We're talking about a major AI-based upscaling update that aims to elevate the image quality on the PS5 Pro to a level comparable to the latest offerings from competitors – including the upcoming FSR 4 from AMD.

What will PSSR 2.0 actually change?

If the leaks are to be believed, it won't just be a minor facelift. The list of improvements looks really promising:

  • Significantly better fluidity - Games that currently hover around 70–80 frames per second are meant to run faster and – more importantly – much more stably.

  • A second life for older titles - PSSR 2.0 is set to offer advanced upscaling for older games in low resolution, meaning classics will look stunning even on 4K and 8K screens.

  • Better image quality - New machine learning algorithms are expected to greatly reduce artifacts while maintaining a high level of detail and sharpness.

It’s also worth noting that according to rumours PSSR 2.0 will not include native Frame Generation. However, this does not close off the developers' options to use solutions like FSR 3 if they wish to further multiply frames. Furthermore, Sony is expected to add new diagnostic tools that will significantly facilitate game optimisation for the PS5 Pro and the new version of PSSR.

So far, Sony has officially remained silent and has not provided any specific date. However, the industry expects that we will soon see another technical presentation from Mark Cerny. If the rumours are confirmed, the PS5 Pro may truly spread its wings.
