The PlayStation 5 has gained an unofficial ability to run games from the cult classic PS2, even from original discs! It's all thanks to the PS5SX2 emulator, created by a modder known as Sword. Interestingly, the software not only lets you run classic titles but can also improve their graphics, even up to 4K resolution.
PS5SX2 is a special version of the popular PCSX2 emulator, designed to run natively on the PlayStation 5. The latest update has added support for original PS2 game DVDs. When a disc is inserted, the console can copy its contents to memory and run the game.
PS2 games in 4K and 60 FPS? It’s possible!
The emulator offers resolution scaling of up to six times, which allows for an image approaching 4K. It also supports AMD FSR, 16:9 aspect ratio fixes and mods that enable 60 FPS gameplay in selected titles. Not everything works perfectly, though. Demanding games can have performance issues, and PS5SX2 requires a modified, jailbroken console. So this is not an official Sony feature available to all users. The standard PS5 disc drive also doesn’t support PS2 games released on discs.
Interestingly, the emulator’s creator doesn’t intend to stop there. Sword confirmed he’s also working on porting the RPCS3 emulator to the PS5, which in the future could allow running PlayStation 3 games, including from discs.
