Used hardware is usually much cheaper than new. This time it’s completely different. US chain GameStop has priced used and refurbished PlayStation 5 Pro consoles at nearly US$1,400. That’s as much as 55% more than the official price of a new console!
In early October the price of a used PS5 Pro at GameStop jumped from about US$800 to US$1,399.99. Meanwhile the suggested retail price of a new console in the US is US$899.99. Interestingly, according to reports from Tom's Hardware, the increase was not a mistake. A leaked internal message to the chain's employees confirmed the move was intentional.
Where do such absurd prices come from?
The main problem is limited availability of the new PS5 Pro in the United States. The console has sold out at many major retailers, and listings at other stores were reaching up to $1,500. Rising memory prices may be contributing to the situation, partly due to huge demand for components used in AI data centres. Another factor is interest in the upcoming GTA VI, which is scheduled for release in November.
