Sony has announced the global rollout of an updated version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for PlayStation 5 Pro. The new version of the image scaling technology will start reaching players in the coming weeks, with the first title to fully utilise its capabilities being Resident Evil Requiem, which launches today. PSSR is an AI-based library that enhances image quality by analysing each pixel in real-time. So far, the technology has increased effective resolution in over 50 games on PS5 Pro. Now Sony is taking it a step further.
New Algorithm, New Neural Network
The updated version of PSSR is not just a cosmetic fix. Sony informs that both the architecture of the neural network and the image processing algorithm have been changed. The result is intended to be better detail reconstruction, higher sharpness, and maintaining a stable frame rate. The new PSSR was developed in collaboration with AMD as part of the Amethyst project, drawing on experience from FSR 4 technology. PC gamers have already seen the effects of this collaboration, and now the solution has been further refined specifically for PS5 Pro.
According to Capcom, the PSSR update has significantly raised the level of detail in the game. Masaru Ijuin from Capcom's R&D department emphasizes that in Resident Evil Requiem, every strand of hair and facial hair element is rendered as a separate polygon, reacting to movement and wind. Thanks to the improved PSSR, more accurate processing of complex textures and subtle light effects penetrating through hair has been achieved. This is particularly important in horror, where atmosphere and visual realism build immersion.
System update coming in March
Sony has announced that in March it will release a system software update for the PS5 Pro. After installation, players will be able to activate the new PSSR in the console settings by selecting the option “Improve PSSR image quality.” Importantly, the upgrade will work on all compatible games, not just new releases. This means that some older titles may gain noticeably sharper graphics without hardware intervention.
The new version of PSSR is one of the biggest graphical improvements for the PS5 Pro since the console's launch. Thanks to collaboration with AMD and a revamped image scaling algorithm, players can expect higher detail quality and stable smoothness. Resident Evil Requiem is the first showcase of this capability, but the real benefits could extend to many more titles in the coming months.
