LG wants to replace soundbars with a new audio system, and FlexConnect could really change that.

Calendar 4/15/2026

LG is making a stronger push into the wireless audio segment, partnering with Dolby. The new Dolby Atmos FlexConnect system is meant to be more than just another soundbar; it’s an attempt to completely change the approach to sound in the living room. Instead of one device under the television, users get a set of speakers that can be placed practically anywhere, and the system will adjust the sound to the space itself.

Sound without cables and without setup limitations

The biggest advantage of FlexConnect is its flexibility. Speakers can be arranged in various configurations at the front, back, with a subwoofer or without, and the system automatically calibrates the sound based on their placement. Interestingly, the TV can serve as the centre channel, which further simplifies the whole setup. The technology is directly integrated into the new LG OLED TVs from 2025 and 2026, meaning a soundbar is not always required as a "command centre." The system supports up to four speakers and a subwoofer, and its greatest strength is its ability to maintain a spatial effect even with non-standard equipment arrangements. This is a huge change for people who do not have ideal conditions for a classic home theatre.

Big potential but also limitations

Although the first impressions are positive, the system is not without its flaws. The biggest issue is its closed nature – LG speakers do not work with TVs from other brands. This means that the user is practically "locked" into one ecosystem, which can be a significant drawback. Questions also arise about delays in gaming and the full utilisation of Dolby Atmos technology in real time. In movies, the problem is less noticeable, as the system can synchronise the picture and sound, but in gaming, it may look different. Nevertheless, FlexConnect has enormous potential, particularly as an alternative to systems like Sonos, which have dominated the wireless audio segment for years.

FlexConnect shows that the future of home audio could be wireless and much more flexible than today, but it all depends on whether LG opens its system to a wider market.
