Sony and LEGO have unveiled a new set dedicated to the original PlayStation console. LEGO PlayStation lets you build a replica of the original console and its distinctive controller. The build consists of 1,911 pieces and measures 26 cm wide when completed. The designers also hid references to the brand's history and to two iconic games from the original PlayStation. The set will go on sale in early October 2026.
The original PlayStation made from LEGO bricks
The new set is the result of a collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment and the LEGO Group. Its main element is a replica of the original PlayStation console that debuted in 1994. Once built the model is about 26 cm wide. The manufacturer describes it as an almost 1:1-scale build compared with the original. Exactly 1,911 bricks are needed to build the whole set. The set also includes a replica PlayStation controller, allowing you to recreate the distinctive look of Sony’s first console. However, the build isn't just a static model to sit on a shelf. The LEGO PlayStation features working mechanisms for the Power and Open buttons. The controller can also be connected to the console, mirroring how the original hardware was used. LEGO designers worked with Sony to create details that reference the early days of the PlayStation brand. The build includes, among other things, hidden nods to the console’s history. The whole set was designed to not only resemble the first PlayStation in appearance but also to evoke the gaming experiences associated with it. For collectors, it can therefore be both a model to assemble and a decorative item tied to gaming history.
Gran Turismo and Ape Escape are included in the set
One of the more interesting parts of the LEGO PlayStation set are two separate dioramas dedicated to games that debuted on Sony's first console. The first references Gran Turismo and shows a miniature race track. The track also includes scaled-down cars that you can use to create your own display. The second diorama is devoted to Ape Escape. It depicts a nostalgic island featuring the game's signature motif. The designers added the option to swap the blue and red lights on the monkey's helmet. Both scenes can be detached from the main build. That lets the set owner display them separately from the console replica. It also allows changing how the whole model is presented without having to dismantle the main build. LEGO and PlayStation therefore didn't limit themselves to simply recreating the console's casing. The set includes elements referencing specific games and the brand's history. It's these extras that are meant to make the build more interesting for long-time PlayStation fans.
The LEGO PlayStation will go on sale on 1 October 2026 in selected countries, including Poland, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. The recommended retail price is US$179.99, €159.99 or £139.99. The set will be available to buy directly from PlayStation from 1 October, while LEGO.com and LEGO Stores will start selling it on 4 October, with LEGO Insiders getting early access. Inside the box are 1,911 pieces, a replica of the console and controller, and dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.
