The release of GTA 6 could prove groundbreaking not only because of the game itself but also because of how it’s distributed. Rockstar Games has announced that the physical edition of GTA 6 will contain only a game download code, not a traditional disc. Although boxes will hit physical and online stores, their contents will be very different from what players have been used to in recent years. The code will allow the full game to be downloaded directly from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. According to the studio, this solution will, among other things, allow players to pre-load files before launch, so they can start playing as soon as servers are unlocked. GTA 6 isn't the first game to be sold this way, but the scale of this launch means Rockstar's decision has huge significance for the whole industry. Many developers and publishers will be watching the market reaction closely. If sales remain very high despite the lack of a disc, other companies may adopt a similar model. The official launch is scheduled for 19 November 2026, while physical boxes with the code are expected to appear a week earlier to enable early downloading of the data. Rockstar has not given a full explanation for the move. Possible reasons include the game's enormous size, a desire to reduce the risk of leaks, or simply financial considerations. Regardless of the reason, the decision clearly shows that even the biggest game releases are increasingly moving toward digital distribution. For many collectors, however, this may be a disappointing change, as the boxed edition no longer provides a physical medium to keep on a shelf.
Digital games dominate the market and GTA 6 could seal the fate of discs
The change introduced by Rockstar isn't accidental. Data from recent months shows that most players are already buying games digitally. According to available statistics, around 85 percent of games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are sold through the PlayStation Store, with only a small portion reaching customers on discs. Even more impressive figures came from Capcom, which said that as much as 93 percent of its sales are digital. Additionally, the new PlayStation 5 models, the PS5 Pro and some Xbox Series consoles are already available without an optical drive or require an extra fee to include one. All this shows that hardware makers and publishers have long been preparing the market for a full shift to digital sales. That doesn't mean, however, that players have no reason to be concerned. Unlike game discs, digital games can't be freely resold or kept for the future if a platform shuts down its store. There are also growing discussions about the actual ownership rights of digitally purchased titles. Despite these doubts, interest in GTA 6 remains huge. Retailers are already reporting very high numbers of pre-orders, and the lack of a disc doesn't seem to put off most customers. Everything therefore suggests that digital distribution has just taken another huge step forward. If GTA 6 succeeds in this sales model as well, traditional disc-based releases could disappear from the market increasingly quickly.
