New information has emerged regarding Apple's plans for proprietary mobile modems that are set to feature in future generations of iPhones. The data comes from the company’s internal code, specifically from the Kernel Debug Kit version for macOS, which was accidentally made public and quickly taken down. The source of the information is a debug package of the macOS kernel, intended solely for internal use. The code contains references to future iPhone models and the communication chips used in them, providing a rare insight into Apple's plans for several generations ahead.
iPhone 17e with C1X modem, but without N1 chip
According to entries in the code, the iPhone 17e may use C1 or C1X modems, however, the latest reports suggest that Apple will opt for the C1X variant. It would be an advanced model of the first generation of the proprietary baseband, which previously appeared in the iPhone 16e.
At the same time, the device is set to be stripped of the N1 chip responsible for wireless communication. This could have real functional consequences, as the lack of N1 likely means no support for the Thread standard, even despite the use of a modem designed by Apple.
iPhone 18 Pro and the uncertainty around the next generation of modems
In the case of Pro models, the situation is less clear-cut. Internal code lists the iPhone 18 Pro in separate configurations with both the C1X modem and the newer C2 chip. This suggests that Apple is still considering whether the second generation of the baseband will be included in all hardware variants. Importantly, regardless of the modem choice, the Pro models are expected to retain the N1 chip. This indicates further differentiation in the communication hardware between the cheaper and more expensive iPhones.
Test configurations, not final specifications
As the information comes directly from internal code, there is no guarantee that the described configurations will make it to the final devices. Apple often tests multiple hardware variants in parallel before making final production decisions.
According to current predictions, the iPhone 17e is set to debut in spring 2026. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to hit the market in autumn, most likely in September.
