Apple and Major League Baseball are set to change the way baseball is watched on the Apple Vision Pro. The first-ever "Friday Night Baseball" broadcast in the Apple Immersive format will debut on 28 August. Viewers will get a 3D image in 8K with a 180-degree field of view. That will allow Apple headset users to watch events from a perspective much closer to being at the ballpark. The new broadcast format will be available for selected games through the end of the regular season.
Baseball comes to Apple Immersive
The first broadcast in the new format will be the meeting between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, scheduled for 28 August at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Apple will use 3D video captured at 8K resolution and a 180-degree field of view to give Apple Vision Pro users a much more immersive experience. The camera will let viewers watch events from unique perspectives, including during batting, spectacular plays at the fence, and reactions from players and fans. The broadcast won't be limited to video alone. Apple will also provide spatial audio, so stadium sounds will surround the viewer. Special graphics will appear during the games showing, among other things, lineups and player statistics. Commentary for the inaugural broadcast will be provided by Paul Severino, Xavier Scruggs and Michelle Margaux. Viewers will also receive additional material with replays of the biggest moments. Crucially, breaks in play won't end the broadcast, so fans will still be able to hear the stadium atmosphere. Full replays and highlight packages will later be available on demand in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro.
September schedule for Friday Night Baseball
Apple and MLB have also scheduled further broadcasts in the Apple Immersive format. On 4 September Vision Pro users will be able to watch the Los Angeles Angels against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as the Detroit Tigers against the Cleveland Guardians. On 11 September the immersive format will present the Cincinnati Reds versus the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres versus the San Francisco Giants. A week later, on 18 September, Apple will present the San Francisco Giants against the Los Angeles Dodgers. At the same time the Philadelphia Phillies will face the New York Mets, although that game has not been designated an Apple Immersive broadcast. The Dodgers–Giants clash looks especially intriguing, as Shohei Ohtani and his team will be fighting for another division title. Earlier, the Milwaukee Brewers will try to hold on to their lead in a matchup with the Cincinnati Reds, whose standout player is Elly De La Cruz. Meanwhile the San Diego Padres, led by Fernando Tatís Jr., will be battling for a National League wild-card spot. Baseball fans in selected countries will be able to watch the broadcasts directly in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro. The service will be available, among others, in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Apple wants to show that Apple Vision Pro can be used not only for films and games but also for watching live sport. "Friday Night Baseball" will become Apple's first regular sports broadcast produced in the full Apple Immersive format. The combination of 8K 3D imagery, a 180-degree field of view, spatial audio and interactive graphics could significantly change how people watch baseball. The first broadcast will take place on 28 August, with further games airing in September. For Apple Vision Pro owners, it will be one of the more interesting opportunities to test the headset's capabilities for sports broadcasts.
