Apple TV+ (which last year shortened its name to Apple TV) is joining the additional subscription offerings in the Roku ecosystem. Users in the USA can now purchase access to the service directly through their Roku account, within the Premium Subscriptions section on The Roku Channel. This is another step by Apple towards maximising the simplicity of access to its platform.
One account, one payment
Apple TV has had an app on Roku devices since 2019. However, users no longer need to create a separate Apple account or log in separately; the subscription can be activated directly through the Roku system. The model is similar to Apple's earlier collaboration with Amazon Prime Video, where the subscription was also integrated with an external platform. The goal is to lower the barrier to entry and increase the number of subscribers through a simplified payment process. In practice, this means access to content through the Apple TV app or directly within the Roku account with one login and one payment method.
Timing not coincidental
The expansion of cooperation with Roku coincides with the return of MLB broadcasts on Apple TV and the start of the new Formula 1 season. This is a moment when the platform can attract new sports viewers. Additionally, a joint agreement between Apple and Netflix regarding the distribution of the documentary series "Formula 1: Drive to Survive" has recently been announced, further fueling interest in F1.
A subscription to Apple TV through Roku in the USA costs $13 a month or $99 a year. New users can take advantage of a 7-day trial period. At this moment, the option is available only in the United States.
Integrating Apple TV with the Roku subscription system is a strategic move aimed at increasing the platform's reach without the need to build its own hardware ecosystem. Simplified access, a single payment, and a strong sports offering could translate into a real increase in subscriber numbers.
