Microsoft is developing a disc-to-digital feature that allows owners of physical copies on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S to obtain a digital license for the title. According to the XCT.live tracker, compatibility among catalogued games already exceeds 80%. Ubisoft has even joined the program. The disc-to-digital feature is fairly simple: insert a compatible game disc into the console's drive. The rest happens automatically, as the system recognizes the disc and assigns the product to your account. The disc remains fully usable.
Over 80% of games are compatible
The percentage of compatible titles looks better than Microsoft had previously suggested. Just two weeks ago the tracker XCT.live indicated compatibility at around 70% of cataloged Xbox One and Xbox Series titles. It's now over 80%. The database contains almost 1,900 games, of which more than 1,500 have been marked as compatible with disc-to-digital. It should be noted, however, that the data comes from a community tracker rather than directly from Microsoft, so these results are not confirmed by Microsoft.
Thanks to Ubisoft’s involvement, series such as Assassin’s Creed, Just Dance and Far Cry have joined the disc-to-digital program. XCT.live’s database already lists numerous compatible releases of the French studio’s games.
There's a catch
Disc-to-digital does not mean a license is completely independent of the physical disc. Microsoft makes it clear that the console may later request confirmation that you still own the disc. Moreover, if the owner uses a disc to obtain a license and then gives it to a friend or sells it, the new owner can use it to get their own license. In that case the original owner loses their digital license. This is, of course, protection against abuse by players.
For now the whole program applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series games. Xbox 360 discs are not supported by this feature.
