Fans of the Gears of War series may be about to add another piece to their collection. Xbox has revealed a limited edition Gears of War: E-Day controller, whose design was directly inspired by the events of Emergence Day. The controller features cracks, red accents, and the signature Crimson Omen symbol visible beneath the surface of the casing. Microsoft has also prepared a second option for players who want to create their own controller using Xbox Design Lab. Both versions should be an interesting addition for those awaiting the return of one of the most recognizable shooter franchises.
Limited controller looks like it’s been through a fight with the Locusts
The new Xbox Wireless Controller features a design inspired by the brutal events of Gears of War: E-Day. Its appearance directly references E-holes, the characteristic rifts that appear on the planet’s surface during the Locust invasion. The housing includes three-dimensional, laser-engraved elements that resemble cracked asphalt. Red color emerges from beneath these cracks, meant to symbolize the energy emanating from the E-holes. Under the surface you can also spot the iconic Crimson Omen, one of the most recognizable symbols of the entire series. Xbox used black ABXY buttons, but the X button has a transparent red design. Red triggers and a transparent D-pad complete the look and further emphasize the device’s wartime aesthetic. On the battery cover there’s a dark silver metallic element resembling a COG dog tag. It references the slogan “Never Fight Alone”, which fits the series’ tone perfectly. The whole package is rounded out by textured grips, which are meant to make the controller more comfortable during longer sessions. Preorders for the controller began on August 12, and its price was set at $89.99.
Xbox Design Lab will let you create your own version
Microsoft has also prepared something for players who want more personalized hardware. Starting September 30 players will be able to create a controller inspired by Gears of War: E-Day using Xbox Design Lab. Users will get access to special artwork created by Luke Preece, a well-known illustrator associated with the heavy metal scene. The centerpiece of the design will be the top shell with a skull placed above crossed Lancer rifles. Around it will be additional skulls and battle marks inspired by the conflict between the COG and the Locust Horde. Players will also be able to further customize the controller to their preferences, choosing, among other things, metallic triggers and a D-pad. Rubberized grips will also be available on the sides and the back of the device. It will also be possible to add a custom engraving, making the controller a more personal accessory. Both controllers can be seen for the first time at gamescom 2026, where Xbox will showcase them at its booth. At the event attendees will also be able to play Gears of War: E-Day, since the campaign will be made publicly playable for the first time. An 8BitDo Ultimate Charging Dock has also been prepared for the controller; it will get a matching war-inspired design and a battery pack that allows the device to be charged wirelessly.
Xbox has prepared for fans of the series two new ways to celebrate the release of Gears of War: E-Day. The limited controller features a heavily weathered, war-torn design inspired by E-holes, the Crimson Omen and the Locust invasion. It costs $89.99, and pre-orders are already live. From September 30, players will also be able to create their own version of the device in Xbox Design Lab.
