Microsoft published another edition of the Xbox Indie Selects program, which each month highlights the most interesting indie games available on the platform. In August 2026 the list featured six titles spanning a wide range of genres, from relaxing adventure games to dark action RPGs and cooperative horror. Each was chosen by the ID@Xbox team as one of the most interesting releases of the past few weeks.
Xbox highlights six standout indie games
The August edition of Xbox Indie Selects shows how varied modern indie games can be. Microsoft picked titles that offer both calm, emotionally driven narratives and challenging, action-packed experiences. Among the highlighted games are Deer & Boy, Hell Clock, D-topia, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, Backrooms: Escape Together, and Moss: The Forgotten Relic. Each of these games delivers a completely different experience, so almost every player should find something they like. ID@Xbox stresses that the selection is not a ranking; all the titles were chosen on equal terms. What they have in common is high production quality and the developers' inventiveness. Microsoft also encourages visiting the special Indie Select Hub on the Xbox Store, where new collections and indie recommendations appear weekly. It's another part of the company's strategy, which has long supported smaller development studios. As a result, Xbox console and PC users regularly gain access to fresh and unconventional releases.
From touching tales to dark adventures and cooperative horrors
The featured games show how wide the possibilities in the indie segment are today. Deer & Boy tells an emotional story of a boy and a deer with almost no dialogue, relying on music, animation and atmosphere. A very different offering is Hell Clock, a dynamic roguelite RPG inspired by Diablo and set in a dark reinterpretation of Brazilian history. Meanwhile, D-topia tackles artificial intelligence and a utopian society, forcing the player to ask questions about freedom and human progress. Fans of quieter titles may be interested in Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, which blends life-sim elements with a story full of friendly ghosts and everyday activities. For those who crave stronger thrills, Backrooms: Escape Together is a cooperative horror built around exploring procedurally generated locations and teaming up with other players. The final highlighted title is Moss: The Forgotten Relic, the classic version of the earlier VR adventure starring the charming mouse Quill. Microsoft says each of these games offers its own unique style of gameplay and can pleasantly surprise even the most demanding players.
The August Xbox Indie Selects lineup is a collection of six diverse indie games that showcase the strength and creativity of smaller development studios. Microsoft once again focuses on titles that offer engaging stories, unconventional mechanics, and fresh ideas, encouraging players to discover less obvious games beyond the biggest AAA releases.
