MicroLED has long been regarded as one of the most promising display technologies. However, very few people can currently afford to pay hundreds of thousands of zlotys for a TV. Intel is reportedly stepping in to help, and its collaboration with AUO could shake things up.
Intel to cooperate with a display manufacturer
According to Taiwanese reports, Intel is in talks with AUO, one of the major panel makers. The companies are said to be discussing a new method of producing and connecting electronic circuits to a microLED substrate. Intel already holds a patent for a technology called "IC Package with Micro LEDs." It involves placing part of an integrated circuit directly in a glass substrate. This approach could, among other things, simplify panel construction and reduce manufacturing costs. Interestingly, the technology could be applied not only in TVs or monitors but also in other electronic devices.
MicroLED has plenty of advantages
The technology is similar to OLED in some respects. Each pixel can emit light on its own. That means very high contrast and excellent control over lighting. However, MicroLED has an edge in several important areas. Panels can achieve very high brightness. They're also less prone to burn-in than OLEDs. On top of that, they offer fast response times. So far, the problem has been the price. Currently, large microLED TVs can cost even hundreds of thousands of zlotys.
Will prices drop?
Collaboration between Intel and AUO could help solve one of this technology’s biggest problems. So far there is no official confirmation that the two companies have formed a partnership. It’s also unclear when any potential solutions would reach mass production. For now, affordable microLEDs remain a thing of the future. But who knows, we may yet see a breakthrough.
